Sketch for a manifesto September 8th 1971

I believe that all people are governed by egocentricity, without exception.

I believe that in order to function within a community or as an individual, it is necessary to overcome egocentricity.

I believe that to combat egocentricity, it is essential to submit to strict discipline.

I believe that this can be achieved through rigorous systems to which one consents to subordinate oneself.

I believe it is necessary to rise early and find a good way to do so; I mean, everyone responsible for children, for example, must see this.

I believe it is necessary to work for the sake of work itself and not for one’s own sake, and therefore, to submit to a strict work discipline.

I believe it is necessary to constantly clear one’s mind and thoughts of egocentric tendencies.

I believe it is necessary to be joyful, dynamic, and grateful.

I believe that life should be rid of empty and egocentric pleasures; I believe it is wrong to dress just to stand out. Listening to music and reading are dangerous and should only be done in qualified contexts; otherwise, they easily become mere entertainment that serves as pleasure alone.

I believe it is necessary to eat at specific times according to nutritional plans to avoid forming pleasurable relationships with food.

I believe it is necessary to abstain from indulgent substances such as tobacco, coffee, beer, wine, chocolate, and so on.

I believe one has a responsibility for one’s physical condition and that it is necessary to maintain it in good shape.

I believe it is necessary to refine one’s language and speech.

I believe that strict discipline is necessary to become a free human being – free in relation to oneself and to others.

I believe it is necessary to control oneself and to formulate a shared purpose and a shared ideology.

I believe that a shared ideology and purpose will prevent us from falling back into the egocentricity and emptiness that render existence hopeless.

I believe we must formulate a creed to rise with every morning, live by every day, and sleep with every night.

I believe that among people who subordinate themselves to a shared ideology, a shared purpose, a shared creed, and shared rules of life, there will arise, by itself, a profound love that will not be self-pleasuring, egocentric, or degrade love into hollow sexual worship.

I believe it is necessary to elevate the level of relationships through work, shared meals, shared reading, shared studies, travel, etc. For it is necessary to raise children to a sense of responsibility and obligation, so they become an integral part of a community.

I cannot do it alone – want to join in?
