Jane Pedersen on Der er dejligt i Danmark (It's lovely in Denmark)

All the walls of the room were covered with maps of different scales. North Jutland covered an entire end wall. There were whole islands, for example, Bornholm composed of topographic maps. It was an experience of Denmark through the language of the map on different scales and thus on different levels of experience.

He had always been very fond of geodesic maps. He believed that they would make a beautiful exhibition. The maps are beautiful in themselves but would not be so beautiful if it were not for the fact that it was so lovely in Denmark. The maps are so-called topographical, they stand precisely for the landscape they cover. It could also be expected that the exhibition would be audience friendly. He foresaw an experience that people would be able to get from the maps. He knew that not a single person would visit the exhibition without a relationship with some place in the landscapes covered by the maps.

People stood with their noses down in the maps and one said to the other: "You can see for yourself, it's shorter when you go that way than if you go the other way." The maps had enough appeal that a person in question would stand right in front of a certain map and stare very carefully at the house still there and wonder why that field is indicated on the map. Poul Gernes hung up the maps with the advance knowledge that there would be a person who said that those trees were planted by my father.
