Bavne School
The school wanted a decoration and contacted New Carlsberg Foundation for financial support. The assembly hall was adorned with painted reliefs of floral motifs, cut out from thick wooden panels and placed in several layers on a base of unpainted hessian or masonite. The relief form part of the halls' wooden structure. The end wall has three large fields of 340 x 190 cm, while each sidewall has sixteen smaller fields of 40 x 80 cm, in groups of four.
The floral motifs are placed symmetrically, both around the large centrepiece at the end wall, and along the sides that mirror each other across the hall. The flat reliefs are unique in Gernes' production, but a clear example of how a building's construction can be used in a decoration. The decoration is completely intact. The students are informed about it. It sparks joy and has become a part of the school's identity.
