Dental clinic
The dental clinic in Neustadt in Northwest Germany belongs to the Danish dentists Peter and Heidi Aaen. For several years, they had worked in a typically German clinic – a cheerless place with an equally cheerless waiting room. It was depressing to look at every day, and in conjunction with a removal, Peter Aaen decided to go all in for colours, primarly for the sake of himself and his staff. The decoration is done by Poul Gernes with his wife and daughter. The family stayed in Neustadt for a week to paint borders and flowers.
Peter Aaen says that many of his patients were a bit of a shock the first time they entered. The most critical are middle-aged men. They say it looks like kindergarten. But the elderly are thrilled. The decoration reminds them of folk art, and that is exactly Poul Gernes’ idea with the way he uses colours and shapes.
