Finn Thybo Andersen on the Palads Cinema
Gernes’ ultimately best-known decoration in the heart of Copenhagen can be experienced by pedestrians and cyclists, motorists and commuter train passengers. You cannot help but see it when moving through the central part of the city. This decoration is related to the cream pie sculptures, Poul Gernes used to make of plaster, to his maypole sculptures, and to the Dream Ship from 1968. Like the decoration of Palads, they are done with a cheerful twinkle in the eye and allusions to the popular art of amusement parks and allotment gardens. Maybe this was how the Greek temples on Acropolis were painted?
