Notes: The dissection hall is decorated with a line of text that runs all the way round as a frieze. This is the prose poem [Desiderata]. The poem reads as a compendium of good advice for a spiritual and modest lifestyle. It is written by American poet Max Ehrmann in the 1920s. But in the 1970s, when it had a wide circulation on posters and cards, it was considered anonymous wisdom, originating from Saint Paul’s Church in Baltimore around 1700. That is how the poem is credited in the decoration at Panum.
