Finn Thybo Andersen on Flügger Paint Factory

Gernes used Flügger's paints and collaborated with firm during many years. Flügger was one of his first assignments after Herlev Hospital. The decoration is found at the second story of the production hall. As in the lobby of Herlev Hospital, Gernes goes through his motifs in “paintings” directely on the wall: circles, check patterns and Matisse-like flowers in square or rectangular fields from floor to ceiling. The fields are placed on a yellowish background with pink and green-blue daps which the eleven-year-old daughter of the family, Ulrikka, who had come along for the first time, was given a chance to paint.

The overall style is more relaxed, and the frieze appears more vivid and organic than its counterpart in Herlev. All the way on the right, the tulip and heart motif turns up in one of its earliest versions. On the adjoining wall is a truly furious relief made of boards and paint pots.
